1. Fruiting Bodies vs. Mycelium: What’s Actually in Your Mushroom Product?
Not every mushroom product starts with the same raw material.
The fruiting body is the part most people recognize as the mushroom itself. It naturally contains compounds like beta-glucans, terpenes, and other constituents that make different mushroom species unique.
But many mushroom powders, coffees, and capsules are made partly—or sometimes primarily—from mycelium grown on grain. That can leave a significant portion of the finished product consisting of leftover rice, oats, or other growing material rather than mushroom fruiting body.
At Forager’s Kingdom, we focus on 100% mushroom fruiting bodies.
Before comparing brands, extraction ratios, or serving sizes, start with the simplest question:
What part of the mushroom is actually in the product?
Sue D. ✓ verified buyer
“I have tried mushrooms in a variety of ways (powder, tea, pills, gummies) with no clear effects. I gave these tinctures a try — THEY WORK.”

2. Why Extraction Method Matters
Mushrooms contain different types of beneficial compounds, but they don’t all extract the same way.
Some compounds are water-soluble, while others are better extracted with alcohol. That means simply grinding a mushroom into powder—or relying on only one extraction method—may leave part of its natural chemistry behind.
This is why we use dual extraction method.
Hot water helps extract compounds such as beta-glucans and other polysaccharides, while alcohol helps capture compounds like terpenes, sterols, and other alcohol-soluble constituents.
Using both methods creates a more complete extract and gives you access to a broader range of what the mushroom naturally contains.
So when comparing mushroom products, don’t just ask how much mushroom is listed on the label.
Ask how it was extracted.
Ross S. ✓ verified buyer
“I’ve tried capsules, bags of ‘freshly ground’ mushrooms, and even another brand of tinctures and the effects were negligible or nothing at all. Whatever they’re doing to create the most absorbable and effective mushroom supplements, I’m a huge fan.”

3. Why Sourcing Matters
Where a mushroom comes from matters just as much as what species is on the label.
Mushrooms naturally absorb compounds from the environment around them, which makes growing conditions, substrate, water quality, and handling important parts of the finished product.
But sourcing is often one of the least transparent parts of the mushroom industry.
A label may tell you the species, but not where it was grown, what it was grown on, or how the raw material was handled before extraction.
At Forager’s Kingdom, we put a much greater emphasis on knowing the origin of our ingredients and keeping the process as close to nature as possible—from organically grown and wild-harvested mushrooms to the wild spring water used in our extraction process.
When choosing a mushroom product, don’t just ask what mushroom is in it.
Ask where it came from.

“I love that it's made from only the fruiting body 👍 potent and effective, I've definitely noticed improvement in my sleep and mood when I wake up.”
4. Different Mushrooms Do Different Jobs
One of the biggest mistakes people make with functional mushrooms is treating them all like they do the same thing.
They don’t.
Different species contain different naturally occurring compounds, which is why they’re traditionally used for different purposes. Lion’s Mane is commonly chosen for focus and cognitive support. Reishi is better suited to wind-down and nighttime routines. Cordyceps is typically used for energy and endurance, while mushrooms like Turkey Tail and Chaga are often chosen for immune support.
That’s why we don’t believe in treating mushrooms like interchangeable ingredients.
At Forager’s Kingdom, each extract has a clear purpose, so you can choose the mushroom that actually fits what you’re trying to support.
The question isn’t “Which mushroom is best?”
It’s “Which mushroom makes the most sense for you?”

5. Why Sustainability Is Part of the Product
For us, working with mushrooms means having a responsibility to the forests and ecosystems they come from.
That’s why Forager’s Kingdom supports One Tree Planted, helping fund tree planting efforts with every order. We also donate to forest pathology research in Pennsylvania, supporting work that helps better understand and protect the forests around us.
We’ve also built our extraction and production process with a relatively small footprint in mind, keeping more of what we do close to home rather than relying on a long, disconnected supply chain.
We believe a mushroom company should do more than take from nature.
It should help give something back.
When you choose a mushroom product, consider not only what’s inside the bottle—but what the company behind it is contributing outside of it.

Honest answers to the questions you'd ask
What does “dual-extracted” mean?
Different mushroom compounds dissolve in different liquids. Hot water extracts water-soluble compounds, including many beta-glucans and polysaccharides. Alcohol extracts less water-soluble compounds, including certain triterpenes and sterols.
Dual extraction uses both methods to create a broader-spectrum mushroom extract.
Are your extracts made from fruiting bodies or mycelium?
We use 100% mushroom fruiting bodies. We do not use mycelium grown on oats, brown rice or other commercial grain.
This means the serving comes from mushroom fruiting-body material rather than a mixture of fungal mycelium and residual growing substrate.
Do I need to take all four extracts at the same time?
No. Keeping the mushrooms separate gives you control over your routine.
We recommend Chaga and Turkey Tail as a morning team for gut, immune and inflammatory-response support. Reishi and Lion’s Mane can be used later in the day for relaxation, cognitive support and recovery.
You can also use the extracts individually based on your routine and goals.
Can I add the extracts to coffee?
Yes. The morning extracts can be added to your regular coffee, water, tea or smoothie. You don’t need to replace the coffee you already enjoy with a premixed mushroom drink.
The evening extracts can be added to water, tea or another nighttime beverage.
What do the extracts taste like?
Mushroom extracts have a naturally earthy, concentrated taste, but the small liquid serving makes them easy to blend into another beverage. This avoids the gritty texture and strong powdered flavor common with many mushroom drink mixes.
